We present the interior design project for a 3-room apartment (constructed surface: 84,70 sqm, used surface: 72.34 sqm) and 2 bathrooms in Oradea.
The mission of the project was to design around a central open space kitchen with a wonderful opening to the living room and to the balcony (SU: 9, 24 sqm) with a superb natural view, and then to develop the style further for the bedroom, bathrooms and work desk.
The challenges of this project involved managing a relatively small space to create a much larger space. We’ve treated the apartment plan just like a tiny space, even if the space can be perceived as generous, its systematization required functional interventions that „open up” the main areas.
Sources of inspiration
The design of the apartment went through several stages of design, and the final picture sought to combine influences from complementary sources, especially from the personal universe of the owner.
We started the project from a conceptual transition of materials – from cold materials (metal and stone) to warm materials (walnut essence), elements that are found in every room in various proportions for continuity.
When working on an interior design project, we seek to balance the subtle energies of the space so that we can achieve a natural transition from masculine to feminine, from warm to cold, natural and artisanal, closed and open, solid or soft, fire and water, the conceptual couplets that define domestic comfort. The effects we seek are site-specific, and in particular, they are specific to the identity of the client, the host of the house.
The owner of the apartment is an engineer and entrepreneur in the field of fine metal processing for the automotive industry, and thus we involved in the project a series of elements made of metal structure, components produced by the customer to integrate passion and business references in the residential environment.
Kitchen, dining room and living room
We wanted to develop a central environment with an open space kitchen, dining, and living room, including a romantic bio-ethanol fireplace for air purification and artistic impression. The kitchen is linear, composed of columns, bases, and suspended units, and in parallel, we designed an island to delimit the space and provide a bar area.

An imposing snack table is placed perpendicular to the island, at a height above the island, to define the dining area for 6 people. The open space kitchen employs the chromatic theme of the arrangement by using the personality of walnut wood for the snack table, the wall cladding and the fronts of the suspended bodies.
The wall cladding next to the white door, made of walnut wood, is also the back of the bedroom wardrobe. For this purpose, we removed the wall to the bedroom and integrated a wardrobe that provides the necessary transition space inside the bedroom, as well as storage space.
In the living room area, the wall cladding with LED lighted shelves replaces the former door to the master bathroom, with access now exclusively from the bedroom. An L-shaped leather sofa holds the main stage facing the TV and the warmth of the fireplace.
The bedroom
The wall cladding in the bedroom is made of the same walnut wood matched with a stone slab for a naturalistic contrast of textures that brings warmth into an intimate environment.
The intimate aspect of the bedroom is highlighted by the transparency of the glass that delimits the main bathroom. One of the functional interventions was to dedicate the space of the main bathroom to the bedroom, a process that came to define a new lifestyle.
At the chromatic level, the shades of gray for textiles give a note of neutrality to the composition of materials, in tune with the micro-cement floor present throughout the house for stylistic continuity and amplification of the space.

The bathroom
The apartment has two bathrooms, including a master bathroom connected to the large bedroom, as well as a service bathroom. Our interventions were made at a functional level for the main bathroom by removing the wall from the bedroom and building the wall from the living room, where the front door used to be.
The new bathroom area is separated from the bedroom using a smoky glass wall doubled by a metal grille (produced by the owner), also doubled by another glass wall for the toilet, so as to maintain an element of discretion.

The bathtub is a focal point of interest for the owner, and the cubist design emphasizes the modern line of the space.
The wall cladding behind the bathtub hides a technical space through which the water supply and drainage pipes are drawn, including the toilet basin.
The LED-lit wall profile next to the tub offers a degree of depth as well as storage space for the bathroom inventory. Next to the mirror, we find the same leitmotif elements, walnut wood, and black metal.
The work-from-home office
The owner of the apartment requested a space dedicated to the office to work on some projects from the comfort of home. The suspended metal shelves are to be manufactured by the owner, as well as the tables with metal structures and the storage units under the desk. The wall cladding is made of stone (slate), and the desk itself is made of walnut wood, materials that are found in various proportions throughout the house.

Project challenges
We started this project with difficulty due to a previous design proposal received by the owner from another designer, see photos below.
We wanted to divert the client from previous proposals, especially from artificial chromatics based on strong contrasts, in favor of a more mature naturalistic approach to the apartment to gain extra space, rather than simply “decorate”.
Functional re-partitions for space management
In most cases, interior design projects involve widening the spaces or inventing solutions that open the spaces by re-compartmentalization. It’s a common practice to eliminate a wall that is not part of the resistance structure.
Also, a very important aspect in the case of a re-compartmentalization is to redesign the plans for the electrical and sanitary installations, with circuits that offer complete accessibility to various outlets.
Defining new areas using ingenious subdivisions is the winning solution in the case of conventionally divided apartments, but apartment owners usually take into account the additional prices and are thus reluctant to welcome any type of functional change.
In truth, the price of area compartmentalization is not that high, yet the space gained is worth the investment.
Project development
Our proposals have been approved by the client, the project is in production. We’ll return with photos during the construction site and a professional photo session at the end.
